Thing #19 Tooling Around

“Best Thing Since Sliced Bread”

For thing #19 I downloaded the Catalog Plug-in on my home computer.  It is very popular with the 24/7 internet users in my household.  Sister-Ruth has a comment on the “Tooling Around” blog.

Thing #18: Discovering Web 2.0 tools

yelp

I explored “Yelp” from Guides and Reviews from the Short List of Web 2.0 Awards.  This tool would be very useful to use for customers.  Sometimes the Library receives questions from customers wanting information on restaurants in the Columbus area.  This would be a good consumer tool to find reviews of restaurants from a certain city.  I also looked at Auto Repair shops.  If someone is not a member of Angie’s List, I think this tool would be a good second choice.

Sister-Ruth found a shop to take her truck.  They did a fine job tuning-it up.

Thing #17 Web-based apps: Google Docs

I tried Google Docs and Google’s version of PowerPoint.  I thought both were too basic to create documents from scratch. My preference for creating a document would be to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.  I don’t see the advantage of using this product. If you want to share a document on the internet, you would still need to use a Word Processing type of software then upload the completed document to Google Docs.

Let’s see if this Power Point in PDF works:

What sister-ruth thinks of Google Docs:

Sister-Ruth’s Blog is now on the Learn & Play Wiki.  She also has an entry on the Favorite Books page.  She just can’t resist a super-hero in a pair of BVD’s.

Thing #15 Wikis

wiki

Wikis can be very useful tools for libraries.  I hope CML plans to incorporate them on the Libraries Website and Intranet.  For example, the “Topics” list on the Reference page would be good candidates for Wikis.  Sister-Ruth would like to see CML produce a wiki similar to the “Booklovers Wiki” developed by the Princeton Public Library that would let customers add their favorite books.   Sister-Ruth is an avid reader and has a long list of favorites to contribute.

Thing #14 Library 2.0 & Web 2.0

I’ve read the 5 perspectives on Web 2.0 and the information on Wikipedia as part of the “Discovery Exercise.”   At this point in time, I have nothing insightful to share………after I think about it for a while, I will write a post.

Thing #13 del.icio.us

delicious

  del.icio.us

Signed-up to del.icio.us.  I have a few bookmarks.  Tried to get the “del.icio.us icon” on the browser tool bar.  That was a bust.  Tried to get a “delicious network badge icon” embedded in this post.  Nothing there.  Looks like another bust.

On to Thing #14.

This is an “Avatar” of Sister Ruth.

Signed up to Twitter.  Very popular among the Colleagues I work with.

Following a few people, have a few followers.  Creating an “avatar” for twitter was most fun.  This week is catch-up so on to Thing #13.

Thing #11 LibraryThing

Library Thing is a bust.

I could not find a widget for Library Thing on WordPress.  I tried adding the HTML copy to see the book titles to this post.  Nothing shows up.  My colleagues couldn’t figure this one out either.  I’m not having fun.

Thing #10: Image Generator

magazine-cover2

It has been two months since I have posted anything.  Some staff actually work.  This was the last thing I worked on, but did not write a post about it.  So…..here is Sister Ruth on the cover of Nuns Weekly produced by Image Generator fd’s Flicker Toys.  It was quick, easy and got the job done.  On to Thing #11.
